How much will your Water Heater last? Rods its anode will tell. Part 2

Evaluation Anode
If the metal anode rod has more sacrifice exposed steel rod, then still in good shape. However, if the entire surface is covered in calcium carbonate and this makes it hard calcium carbonate, this will prevent the anode protection of the tank more. This is called passivation. If the anode has subsided, do not look as the eye alone. To test the passivation, you must double the anode rod in hand. In the curve, to observe small amounts of scales. The anode must be replaced if there are more bar areas are exposed to the metal thread of sacrifice. It should be replaced if the top or bottom of the rod has deteriorated, the exposure of six or more inches of exposed wire. An anode must also be replaced if the anode is less than half the size 3 / 4 Inch Diameter rod. If the anode has subsided, divided by its length, or has become in many holes could also be time for replacement. When the whole sacrificial metal has been spent, then the steel bar will begin to fray. After steel bar is worn, the only thing left is the hex head or hot water outlet nipple, if it's an anode combination. At this point, the tank will start to corrode. If the anode is in the above conditions, the damage to the tank may already have happened.
Hex Head Hidden in the models newest
Hex head screw caps are tight 3 / 4 inches in diameter. They are attached to the anode rods in the upper water heaters. Some are easily visible from the top of the water heater. Other times it will be under the fiberglass or on a piece of plastic. To locate the hex head, drill surface of 1 / 4 inch hole through the plastic cap of the water heater. Do not drill deep into the tank itself. Use a long flat blade screwdriver to investigate below the top of the water heater to find the hex head. In gas heaters, the hexagon is the same distance from the combustion as hot and cold lines are. In electricity, the anode off-center so as not to fall into the heating elements. Some holes may need to be excavated in order to locate the hex head. Once the hex head is found, must be permanently displayed. Use a hole saw capable of cutting metal or plastic to carve a hole big enough to allow future access to the hex head. Use two people at this time to unscrew the hex head, a stationary tank for and the other to use a breaker bar and socket to fit the head. Anywhere in the 3 / 4 inch to 1-1/16 inches.
In the future when buying a new water heater, purchase only those with hexagonal heads and exposed.
Hidden hexagon in older models
To find the hex head water heaters older, simply unscrew the screws holding the lid in place, mark the placement of the top and the water heater with a marker, then remove the top to find the hex head. Oh, heaters found in many buildings today have froth on top and can not be Remove. Again, if the hexagon is not exposed at the time of purchase, do not buy the tank in particular. For a tank with a hexagonal head and exposed.
Anode Inspection
Anodes should be inspected at least every two years, when softened water is used, but at least every four years under normal conditions of water. Sometimes the location of the anode is actually written on the instructions of the water heater.
Installation of anodes
To remove the bar of age, pull it as far as possible, bend it, then pull it the rest of the output. To install the new, bend the rod directly at the center, halfway inserted, straightening against the opening, and install the rest of the road. Screw in the anode rod at this time. If you are unable to screw in place because it is too bent, pull it partially, and use the opening of righting further. If there is enough space to install the roof of the new anode rod, consider a link anode. These anodes have many ties small interconnected, and look similar to sausage links. You can also try zinc anodes, as they bend much easier than the magnesium ones. Another way to install an anode is to drain the water heater and the tip is more than enough to allow easy access to the anode.
Length
Anodes are typically 3 feet 8 inches. Anodes should be only a few inches shorter than the tank itself. Buy anodes that are a little too long instead of a little short. This way you can cut shorter if anode is too high.
Impressed Current – Rod
In relation to commercial water heaters, are not impressed current bar. These bars are not self-generate current and sacrificial anodes. They get the power of an electrical power source. Many commercial heaters give the location of the impressed current bar. They do not need to be replaced throughout life. It is possible that require periodic cleaning. Simply wipe them with a towel. If rust appears inside a water heater with a power bar impression, you should either call manufacturer, call a plumber, or install sacrificial anodes.
