How to fix a scratch on a wood floor
Author: Brian Jenkins
Wood floors are the heart of a home – warm, bright, cozy and homey, hardwoods can make any room look great. But what happens when, after all their efforts in maintaining this beautiful wood in the same condition again, go home and find that someone has dragged to a kitchen chair in the living room and left a long, bright scratch as evidence of his crime? There are ways to repair scratches on your wood floor, even the deepest of them.
The special resource that is used to scratch on your hardwood floor depends on a number of factors – the depth of the scratch is, the finish of your floor, the stain on the floor (if any) and if the scratch has penetrated it. Here are tips for fixing the scratches on your hardwood floors from superficial to what "in the world did that?" Remember that you should always test any solution in a little discreet floors to make sure it does not damage the floor.
Home Solutions superficial scratches
For the most superficial of scratches on a floor that is not finished with polyurethane, you can try the traditional review for repairing scratches in wood furniture:
1. Rub a nutshell at zero if it is so shallow that barely scratch the wood.
If the scratch is through the finish and wood Mars, try this:
1. Mix one part olive (not virgin) or vegetable oil with one part lemon juice.
2. Rub the mixture firmly into the wood with a clean, lint-free cloth, rubbing in the direction from zero until it disappears.
For slightly deeper scratches, you can try the following:
1. Using a pencil the same color than wood, the color at zero.
2. Scrape excess wax with the flat side of one sheet of filo on a 45 Degree Angle. Scrape away from you and keep the tip flat against the floor.
3. Wax the floor.
Again, the changes are not polyurethane finished floors, which should never be waxed. For those, you can try these simple solutions for superficial scratches:
If the scratch has not penetrated the finish into the wood:
Arena 1. The lightly shaded area with 320-grit sandpaper to feather the edge.
2. Use a soft cloth in two or three light coats of polyurethane, allowing it to dry completely between coats.
If the scratch has penetrated the finish to damage the wood:
1. Use a polyurethane touch-up kit purchased a hardware store.
2. Fill with zero padding.
3. Stain if necessary.
4. Finish with two or three light coats of polyurethane.
You can buy a repair kit at your local hardware store wood to keep in your toolbox. It consists of several sticks wood putty color that look like crayons. When a scratch, just choose the nearest color to color wood stain, rub the putty on it and polish with a soft cloth. The virtually zero disappear.
Gouges and deep scratches,
Again, the best solution to repair deep gouges and scratches on your hardwood floor depends on the plant's general condition and extent of the damage. If your floor is in a state generally excellent and the gouge affects only one or two planks of wood, your best option is probably to replace the boards.
If the damage is more further, or if the rest of the plant is starting to show wear and replacement of boards that stand out, your best option may be the screen and repainting of wood floor. Before you decide to do it yourself, there are some things to consider:
1. The selection and refinishing is a step of sanding ground down and restaining and refinishing. That you are using an abrasive screen on a floor buffer to sand off the existing polyurethane finish, delete everything dust, and then applying a new coat of polyurethane.
2. While you do not penetrate as deeply with a screen, you still need a lot polyurethane dust. This is a DIY job, but only if you're an experienced DIYer.
3. If you decide to do it yourself, be aware of all safety precautions and health and take. You have to work with a Dust Mask, and you have to protect the rest of the house of dust created by detecting the word.
If the scratches have penetrated the finish and gouged the wood, you may have to refinish the floor. As the detection and repair coatings, this is just a job for yourself, if you're an experienced DIYer. If you are within your budget, sanding and finishing a wood floor is a job for professionals.
