The secret to perfect welding lines

Solder is used to hold different colored glass pieces together in a stained glass panel. To achieve a professional quality, weld lines should be smooth and uniform. This can be achieved by following basic steps and using quality tools and supplies.

The tools and supplies needed for welding include a soldering iron, solder and flux. The welder must have a ceramic Heating Element with either a Temperature Controller built in or connected to a specific service temperature controller. The solder used should be a 60/40 mix for most alloys welding. Decoration for mixing welding alloy 60/37 solder is recommended. A flow toilet smoking is preferred fluid flow.

Basic steps for welding
1. Heat the iron to 68 in the controller Temperature
2. Use an abrasive sponge or a damp sponge to clean the tip of the plate before and periodically as you work.
3. Slightly applying the flow to a section of stained glass project you are working in
4. Use 60/40 solder, extending it to a manageable length, then lightly touches the area to work.
5. Place the solder on the tip of the iron and move both the iron and solder to a slow steady speed along the veins of aluminum flux copper.
6. When you need to end or stop, not just move the vertical iron out, but rather slide the iron to the glass.
7. No to welding the perimeter of the stained glass piece, leaving about ½ inch over the edge. This will allow the zinc came to fit in your glass.
8. When finished with one side of the stained glass piece, carefully turn it over and repeat the same process on that side.

How to avoid common problems
• pits or bubbles in the weld lines – flow too well and causes more bubbles
• Portions of visible copper foil – Use of very little flow, portions of the copper strip remains visible
• Lines skin disease – The iron is not hot enough, turn the temperature up in small increments
• glass breaks – or iron was too hot or held in one place too long
• Welding spits and spits – Also used much flow
• Lines of Flat – Iron moved too fast or not enough solder was used
• Solder bumps – Iron is too slow or solder was used
• The spikes at the weld – The iron was not hot enough
• Welding filters through the other side – The iron was too hot
• Copper plate arises when welding – This might be the result of too much heat from the plate, moving very slowly, the flow too much or defeat a bad job

While the mask slips a few inconsistencies in weld lines, others still will not be noticed and taken the professional look of your piece. With patience, practice and the right tools and supplies you may have lines professional soldering.
