Tape â € "still the best backup and archiving

The film is one of the true diehard old die in the world of data storage and archiving. (Remember the firing of the Apollo, when the fate of the astronauts was held by the spinning reels of magnetic tape in the mission control?) But with the introduction in recent decades a great much more modern media â € "optical disks, memory cards and zip drives, for example, friction tape-olds still have a role to play?

If you're a traditionalist, you will be pleased to know that the answer is an (almost) unqualified "yes." The enduring popularity band is due to the wide range of advantages.

On one hand, the magnetic tape used for backup is extremely profitable. It can backup your server all in a midrange tape costs about $ 20. In addition, the magnetic tape can be reused. So you can copy the new information ribbons of previous backups. As data grows and changes, you are always making new copies and are not overwhelmed by countless spools or rolls of tape.

So there's a long tape archival stability. Tape is not stored on open reels, but Hardy cartridge formats, including DLT and LTO. However, the fact is that the film is a means of contact. So the resulting abrasion will ultimately wear the ribbon. However, the life of the tape is compared favorably with other media. And consider this. Of course, the film has its own weaknesses, to be handled with care. On one hand, is a medium of thin plastic and therefore need to be stored in the right environment free of corrosive elements. A dedicated file room is essential for efficient storage.

And with respect to recovery data, you have to remember this. In essence, the data has been overwritten is gone forever. A tape drive will not let you get older beyond overwritten data portion. However, for tapes damaged by the elements, the scenario is more promising.
