Low-voltage fuses and circuit breakers

The document seeks to describe in a simple physical background of low voltage fuses and circuit breakers operation conditions of high short-circuit currents. Furthermore, attempts to draw some conclusions of their specific operational features, which substantially influence the practical implementation of fuses and circuit breakers.
Introduction
Under the slogan "Safety First" are presented in the following discussion the Low-voltage fuses and circuit breakers as the most important and most common elements of protection in electrical engineering, viz. facilities plants.
The basic physical and electrical processes are shown in short circuit conditions. The work aims, firstly, to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of both elements of protection and, secondly, to show the way of their interaction, with special emphasis on their performance in the domain of high short-circuit currents.
First, the following criteria to be followed in selecting the elements of protection:
– Security
- Reliability
- Quality
- Diversity
- Economy
An electrical installation must be designed and constructed so as to allow the protective device to reduce electrical circuit only when really necessary. But now with absolute reliability! When there is an error, the protection device, either a fuse or circuit breaker, you must disconnect from an electrical circuit before damage to the installation, Power Supply or consumption occurs.
Advantages and disadvantages of fuse cut-outs – Fuses
As mentioned above, to assess the advantages and disadvantages of a single protection element, the above criteria must be observed:
Safety:
* Losses.
Reliability:
* Following cutting cartridge fuse is replaced, the new properties are fully released,
* The aging resistance,
* Use simple.
Quality:
* The current production is highly automated, which ensures small deviations in the pattern techniques for the total amount of goods in regular production.
Diversity:
* Use of low and high voltage networks,
* Protection of electronic equipment and devices.
Economy:
* Compared to their capacity and size, and the price, this is the most economical solution.
The disadvantages of the fuse-out reduction is due mainly to the following facts:
* They must be replaced when a fault occurs, which usually means a certain time without power;
* Most difficult environment and property overload, which depends on physical processes in the fuse element.
Advantages and disadvantages of circuit breakers
Comparison circuit breakers by the same criteria:
Safety:
* Possibility of precise setting of the time-current characteristic;
* Grade enough otherwise much of the current limiting, even in the account of the economy.
Reliability:
* The truth is that modern design solutions and ensure a high degree of reliability, but over time, or the number of cuts on the characteristics of each switch circuit progressively deteriorated.
Quality:
* In the trigger circuits increases the applicability.
Economy:
* The economy is mainly in the short time to reconnect;
* The circuit breakers imply a difference in product price.
The weakness of the circuit breakers is mainly through the following facts:
* The disconnect in the exhaust gas ionizing effect appears, which can cause various effects in the cabinet;
* With the number of short-circuit disconnection of a circuit breaker gradually loses its technical properties.
