A question about the northern lights and magnetic field?

I was taught that the Earth was covered in a magnetic field that stopped rays the Sun and energy to come … and so we burned to death, but also taught me that the magnetic field is weaker in all of North and South Poles and when the sun's rays and the energy came through they would create the Northern / Southern Lights. My question is: If the magnetic fields are weaker around to the poles, why not the sun's rays and energy melted the snow and ice? (PS-my facts might be slightly off so please correct me if I wrong)

Your data is mostly correct. The reason that the sun does not melt all the ice is due to two reasons: 1.) The poles receive sunlight very indirect, the sun never rises more than a few degrees above the horizon and therefore most of that energy is very indirect. Think about how the Earth spins on with the sun. 2.) The poles are mostly frozen. Therefore covered by the white ice reflects most solar energy back into space. (90% in done). Think about how hot a car gets black on a summer day as opposed to a white car.
