How to Use the Silver soldering and welding torch butane
Author: Adam Hunter
The technique of welding is an essential part of jewelry and not as intimidating or difficult as beginners often think. Silver solder is used for conclusions that go up or ring to keep the jewelry pieces in place within a design, so a little practice will ensure that the end result is very professional and clean as possible.
Silver Solder comes in several different grades, each defined by its particular melting point. "Ex-easy" and "easy" are probably the best guys to work with them and have the lowest melting temperature. But be aware that if you are working with the conclusions of the sterling silver solder used must meet the same standards of issue of the conclusions, so that you have to use sterling silver solder.
Working with butane torches can be intimidating at first, as you are working with a high temperature tool. So safety precautions must be taken before starting work. Make sure the work surface is resistant to heat, use of safety glasses in case impurities in the weld or the conclusions of the cause of the liquid solder to "spit" and that you have a small Fire Extinguisher handy. It is also important to ensure that your workspace is well ventilated. Small butane torches are similar to those used in kitchens to make crème brulee and are ideal for small jobs welding and closing jump rings attaching charms to bracelets or adding the clasps for necklaces. Besides its butane gas torch, you will need to flow, an annealing of bread, a block of charcoal, pickles (vinegar is ideal), a pickle jar and tweezers. An optional extra which can be very useful, is commonly is known as "aid" or "third hand". This table is a tool that has alligator clips that can be angled to keep your work place, leaving both hands free to work.
Before soldering, ensure that the piece you are working is very clean, no grease or dust on the surface. This can be done with warm water and mild detergent. Also make sure the seams are about to weld fit perfectly, and if there are any gaps file or sand of the part and adjust until the seams are tight.
Place the block of coal in the annealing of bread. Charcoal reflects heat, giving a surface for safe welding. Use the 'helping' hand to keep your piece firmly in place on the block or put directly on the piece surface of the carbon block. Apply to the flow of area you want to weld. Flux is a cleaning chemical that removes all the silver oxide surface search and also allows the silver solder to flow freely when heated.
Silver solder is of two types, but the most common type used with butane torch is a welding thin sheet that can be cut with scissors into the appropriate size for the job. Place a very small piece of solder on the seam want to enter. The sticky flow also acts to maintain the solder in place. Now is the time to apply the heat of the torch to ensure that everything is in place and he was satisfied with the position of the solder before you start. Try to avoid holding the flame in the same position as it can burn or damage the piece, so gently move the tip of the flame at the weld to the surrounding area begins to shine. At this point, the solder will liquefy and flow into the seam. Immediately remove the heat and allow to cool piece. Once completely cool, place it in the pickle bath to remove any oxidation. Then can rinse the piece in a solution of water and baking soda (which neutralizes acid brine bath) and polishing the final piece.
If you are using gemstones in their work, remember that heat and chemicals used in this process can affect them, eliminating the brightness of the surface or in the case of some more porous stones, damage to the stone itself. So try to avoid working too close to the gemstones with butane torches or immersion in the solutions.
